Rekha began her career in the Ramoji Rao film Chitra in 2001. She had a sensitive role, that of a girl who gets married and has a child while in college. The film was appreciated for its content as well as for Rekha's performance. She was also called Jinke Mari after the popular song in the film. Rekha followed Chitra up with a deglam role in Huchcha opposite Sudeep. She played Kiccha's scared and traditional lady love in the film, and won more acclaim. She was also paired opposite Darshan in the hit Majestic. She then appeared in more films of the Chitra mould - like Tuntaata. During this time, she was quite busy in the Telugu film industry as well, having made her debut with the superhit Anandam.


Her next was Chellata in 2006, in which she was paired with Ganesh. The film was a remake, and was directed by MD Shridhar. No one expected it to do well, but it was a success, and she teamed up with Ganesh again in the 2007 film Hudugaata. Hudugaata was also a remake, and it released after Ganesh's Mungaaru Male went on to be a blockbuster, and this film too was a major commercial success. Rekha's movies after Hudugaata have not faired well at the box office, Tamashegaagi, Hettare Hennanne Herabeku and Gunavanta (with Premkumar) were all disasters at the box office. Ramesh Arvind's Accident in which she played Vasundhara, Ramesh's social worker wife, was appreciated critically.


In 2009, Rekha will be paired opposite Tarun in Parichaya, by the Hudugaata team. She will also be paired with Darshan yet again in Boss.
