Kanchana |
Kanchana (Telugu: కాంచన) is a noted Telugu actress of the 1970s. She acted in all four South Indian languages: Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam. She has also acted in Hindi films as well.
Personal life and education
Kanchana was born in a well-to-do family. She learnt Bharata Natya and Music. She was working as a Air Hostess, when she was discovered by the film director Sridhar. He gave the heroine role in his film Preminchi Choodu in 1965.
She now lives in Bangalore, close to her sister and brother-in-law. |
Kanchana acted in over 150 films, in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi movies. She retired from films in the early 1980's. In 2005, she was presented with the MGR award and in 2007 the ANR Swarna Kankanam award.
She was appropriately known as the Queen of the Seventies in South Indian film industry. Her performances in the movies Kalyana Mandapam, Pavitra Bandam, Manchivadu were well appreciated and recognized. She played the role of Uttara in the film Veerabhimanyu which established her in the industry. Next year she acted in Annapurna pictures film Atma Gouravam with veteran director K. Viswanath.
She acted with Krishna in some glamarous roles in Ave Kallu, Nenante Nene and Dharma Daata. Not only in social roles, she acted some mythological roles in pictures like Sri Krishnavatharam. After retirement as heroine, she acted in some goood films like Ananda Bhairavi.
